Prerequisites: Mathematics 137, 143, 160, or 170 or equivalent course (i.e., college-level algebra or higher).
Textbook: Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data (Second Edition) by A. Agresti & C. Franklin. ISBN: 0-13-513199-5. A copy of the textbook is on reserve in the library.
Course Web Page: Refer to the course web page/log for information concerning the course including brief summaries of material covered in class, recommended readings and homework problems, copies of hand-outs, answer keys, quiz scores, and other information.
Homework: Homework problems will be recommended regularly but will not be collected/graded. Solutions solutions will be made available.
Quizzes: There are seven quizzes. The first six quizzes will be administered on 9/10, 9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 11/5, 11/19. The seventh “quiz” will be a take-home quiz that will be distributed after the Thanksgiving break. A calculator will be necessary for all quizzes. Make-ups for missed quizzes will only be permitted for documented university sanctioned events or in extreme circumstances. Notice of a missed quiz must be given in advance of the time of the quiz, and arrangements for make-up quizzes for foreseeable absences must be made prior to the time of the missed quiz.
Final Examination: Sections 01 and 02 of Statistics 251 will be administered a common final examination. The final will be from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Monday, December 15, in AgSci 106. The final examination may not be taken at another time unless there is a conflict with another final examination administered at the same time or you have more than two final examinations on the same day.
Grading: The quizzes altogether are worth 75% of your course grade. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped when midterm and final letter grades are determined. The remaining six quizzes are thus each worth 12.5% of your course grade. The final examination is worth the remaining 25% of your course grade. Initially grades will be assigned according to the following: A (90%-100%), B (80%-89.9%), C (70%-79.9%), D (60%-69.9%), F (less than 60%). Assignment of letter grades may be “curved” at the discretion of the instructor.
Statistics Assistance Center: The SAC is a free drop-in tutoring service for undergraduate and graduate students in statistics courses at the University of Idaho.
Disability Support Services: Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have a documented disability. Please notify the instructor during the first week of class of any accommodation(s) needed for the course. Late notification may mean that requested accommodations might not be available. Accommodations must be approved through Disability Support Services located in the Idaho Commons Building, Room 333. Phone: 885-7200. Email: dss@uidaho.edu.
Academic Honesty: You should be aware policies of the University of Idaho concerning academic honesty (see Article II of the Student Code of Conduct). Breaches of academic honesty will not be tolerated and will result in an F for the course and referral to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action.
